Oga Otumala is a Nigerian-born artist, singer, songwriter, producer, global missionary, and humanitarian whose life and work reflect a deep commitment to legacy, unity, and faith. Born in Igede land, Benue State, Nigeria, in the 1960s, Oga’s musical journey began early—so inspired by music that he built his first guitar out of bamboo as a child.
By the 1980s, he had risen to prominence in the Nigerian music scene, performing on television and radio, winning multiple first-prize awards, and earning international recognition. In 1987, he represented Nigeria in the USAID “We Are the World” pan-African famine relief project, raising funds for the Ethiopian famine. The following year, he relocated to the United States, where he continued to expand his work as a musician, producer, and minister.
Oga’s impact has stretched far beyond the stage. He is the first African to serve as a voting member of the Grammy Awards board, a published songwriter of “America Recovers” (a national unity song), and a mentor to emerging artists across Africa and the Diaspora. Today, he continues to shape the next generation as both a talent developer and a gospel minister.
But it is his heart for people and his passion for building legacy that birthed the Back to Africa (B.T.A.) Foundation. As Oga explains, “I am someone who has been helped by God and people to get where I am. I didn’t have a lot materially or financially. God has used me to help people, and people to help me. When I see others going through struggles, I can relate because I have been there myself.”
For Oga, legacy is not about personal fame—it is about lifting others to step into God’s promises for their lives. He believes that every person is called to build legacy, and the B.T.A. Foundation is his way of giving back: empowering students through scholarships, developing talent, and reconnecting Africa and the Diaspora. “Back to Africa,” he says, “means returning to our roots, embracing our identity, and creating a future together that honors God’s purpose.”
Looking ahead, Oga envisions the foundation advancing 1 to 10 million students into higher education within the next decade, while also investing in advanced education and talent development for children across Africa and the Diaspora. His call is simple yet profound: “Together as one—Africans Unite!”
Through music, ministry, and humanitarian service, Oga Otumala continues to build bridges, honor heritage, and inspire generations to rise in faith, unity, and purpose.
